Disclaimer: I recieved a free copy in exchange for my honest opinion.Incidentally, I also gave it to my mom to read to get a second opinion since her threshold for tolerating grammar mistakes is much higher than mine. She said:
- It's too depressing for too long and then gets happy far too quickly (unrealistically fast). It's okay in the end.
Neutral: As mentioned in other reviews, the book needs a strong editor and proofreader. Since these don't bother everybody, I figured I'd categorize them as neutral.
Good: There was a nice twist in the end that I didn't see coming.
Descriptions of objects are decent (3/5 stars) - There's a lot of thought and care put into the descriptions of objects.
Plot (3/5 stars) - If you can get past the flaws including a horribly long "down" stage, there's an uplifting tale of magic mending this lady's heart.
Could be Improved:
Pacing is spastic (1/5 stars) - The first 50% of the book is all about how awful Catherine Daley's life is and the last 50% is all about emotional sunshine and gingerbread.
Characterization (2/5 stars) - Catherine herself is okay, but everybody else is forgettable. I don't even remember the psychologist's name and I finished the book about 10 mintues ago. He did make me laugh aloud but only because what he said seemed so far off from what a psychologist should be saying. (When he noticed her strong emotional turnaround he said something to the effect of "great, the new medicines much be working.") Her sister, Tina, also had a funny line in one of their phone conversations. (Something like, "I just went crazy, like you." = ouch. They haven't spoken in years and that comes up first conversation??) Maurice the hospital lunch delivery guy was good. (He almost seemed human).
Dialogue is often very wooden (2/5 stars) - people generally just don't talk like they do in here.
Coincidences abound - I know you need a certain level of suspension of disbelief to even buy the concept of a magic advent calendar, but there are also chance meetings and other events herein that poke all sorts of holes in the realism factor.
Conclusion: If you can look past the mistakes, it's an all right story. I would not pick up a sequel, but the ending is generally sastifying.

The Christmas Calendar eBook Liz Niccum Reviews
This is my favorite holiday book of the season! The hardships of Catherine were so well written I feel in my heart a better understanding of my dear friend who struggled with depression for years. I hope that many in similar circumstances are uplifted by this book to live again after suffering great loses. I thank the writer and wish her a very Merry Christmas!
I chose this book as a holiday treat for myself. A very quick read with a caring story line. I gave it a 5 star as the writing was thought giving and holiday feeling
I enjoyed "The Christmas Calendar" very much. I loved reading about the transformation of a cold and broken heart into a new, warm and loving heart. Very sweet story of friendship, forgiveness and a new beginning. Great read for the Holidays!
I was so depressed for the first half of the book I almost didn't finish reading it. BUT I AM SO GLAD I DID READ IT.
It was a miracle only God can do in our lives.
Ms. Niccum kept my interest all the way through the book and it was such nice easy reason I could not help but smile as I read.
This book is well worth the read. If You like a mystery, a Christmas miracle, family tragedies and problems you will entirely enjoy reading this book. While reading the story you will also find yourself thinking . Thinking about problems in your own family.
I am in the middle of this book. I am so intrigued by it. It is touching, yet mysterious! I can't wait to see how it ends.
Okay. I just finished the book today I couldn't put it down once I got about five chapters into it. WHAT a wonderful book! What a wonderfully surprising ending! PLEASE write more! (You left room for a sequel; please write it!)The Christmas Calendar
